The Latvian Rifleman. Riga, Latvia

I love this statue like no other! the expression on the face is empty but can be translated into so very much. To me it shows the power of the old soviet state, it reflects cubism, and communism at the same time. It's just a really beautiful sculpture. I wanted to digitally paint it.. so that I always have a version of something so beautiful which I could be a part of.

Ferrofluid Sculptures

A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field.

Ferrofluids are composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nano-particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration (due to van der Waals and magnetic forces). Although the name may suggest otherwise, ferrofluids do not display ferromagnetism, since they do not retain magnetisation in the absence of an externally applied field. In fact, ferrofluids display paramagnetism, and are often referred as being "superparamagnetic" due to their large magnetic susceptibility. True ferromagnetic fluids are difficult to create at present.

OF COURSE ALL OF THIS IS ELEMENTARY TO A DESIGNER! BUT PLEASE REMEMBER THE RULES AND PATTERNS WHICH GOVERN NATURE!

I'M in LOVE with Nixie!

Nixie Tubes are so AMAZING!
Reminds me of the Cold War! A lot of these clocks... were installed in military installations.
Nixie Tubes have about 5000hours longevity and the newer ones.. pre-1990's up to 200,000hours.

OLD ADVERTISEMENTS

I don't know how to feel about out Advertisements.
I just feel they were more innocent and we were more trusting at the time.
These days we are walking down a street and seeing an information blur...our minds filter out, and shut off to all the mass advertising we see..

...which makes me think..... Are advertising print campaigns more powerful now.. using 12 sheet ad shells, amongst the wash of media from internet, TV, Radio, Print.

...Or were campaigns more effective in the past? When they were painted on the side of buildings.
and you weren't constantly having to close your mind off to their marketing messages.

JUST MY THOUGHTS!
"WOW wouldn't it be nice if the was 1 week in the year called NO AD WEEK? To give our minds a fresh rinse of all the products, and then it would also be exciting to see which ad campaigns would be effective on the commencing week back to the world of MASS MEDIA ADVERTISING."

Welcome to RUSSIA!

Posters from a guy called Mr.Evil who is a russian artist trying to convey his impression of Russia.
Apparently the SBS or Police have told him to not leave Russia, or create anymore of this type of imagery.

The picture of a woman next to a sign is a public toilet... in Russia all public toilets have a cost.
10R for Russians. 20R for Tourists.

I would still love to live in Russia.. esp St. Petersberg, or Moscow.

funny and fun!

Final Service Industry Poster

A poster I propose for my zine magazine. (A0 Print poster BLACK+WHITE only)
It's basically about how somebody from the past in the 1950's would feel concerned about the service industry of the future, and also how we from the present can appreciate how much better the service industry was in the 1950's. I was so heavily influenced by Russian Constructivism with the layout of this poster.

KINECT! HACKED WHY POST HERE?

Perhaps it seems strange posting this news here, but with my thirst to be cutting edge, to be dynamic with design.
I can see the future of being able to use a kinect in a installation which with the use of processing language and visuals we will be able to interact on a new level with the art we are viewing.. much more interactively than matt pikes Nokia, ambient media installations.
the Kinect is 150pound kit which is able to 3d map environments, on XYZ! it is able to perceive depth which has until now been impossible for the consumer market.

Originally developed by Israeli military technology, it was brought to the consumer market.
Apple wanted to tie this up in so much privacy and DMCA etc rights that the company who produced it then moved onto Microsoft. I CANT WAIT ONEDAY TILL THIS IS HACKED FULLY SO WE CAN PAINT, USE THEM IN INSTALLATION ART, AND INTERACTIVE DESIGN.

NEWS SO FAR WITH REGARD TO HACKED DRIVERS!

LibFreenect - Open Source PC Drivers for Kinect
>> Marcan released the first Open Source Drivers for Kinect:
[QUOTE]
Horribly hacky first take at a Kinect Camera driver. Does RGB and Depth.

main.c implements a simple OpenGL visualization. Hopefully it should be mostly self-explanatory... You pretty much just open the USB device, call cams_init(dev, depthimg, rgbimg), and your depthimg and rgbimg callbacks getcalled as libusb processes events.

TODO:
- TONS of cleanup. I mean LOTS.
- Proper buildsystem (CMake probably)
- Determine exactly what the inits do
- Bayer to RGB conversion that doesn't suck
- Integrate support for the servo and accelerometer (which have already been reverse engineered)

BIG TODO: audio. The audio chip (the Marvell) requires firmware and more init and does a TON of stuff including the crypto authentication to prove that it is an original Kinect and not a clone. Who knows what this thing does to the incoming audio. This should be interesting to look at.

CUSTOMER SERVICE is down the drain!

Disappointed with how everything is becoming a wash of digital assistance from online robotic customer service rule based solutions, to ticket machines, to having to check out your own grocery, take your own trolly back. I wanted to highlight this problem from the perspective of the 1950's when customer service, and the whole customer is always right perspective.
